Regeneration is happening in Vauxhall - the last bastion of non-gentrified society in a central London riverside location. Damien Hirst has planning permission to open a complex of galleries in Newport Street whilst further down the road, Vauxarts, a local studio provider, loses its space to developers.
“I think it’s inevitable that the construction of this organisation [Newport Street Gallery] would have a very dramatic effect… It’s a very substantial development in one piece, and I think it would inevitably provide a charge for other things to happen here.”
Peter St John, Director, Caruso St John Architects, PUSH THE ENVELOPE, 2006
“I’m very intrigued. Artists might be able to do a hell of a lot better than curators in institutions. We’ll see!”
Sheena Wagstaff, Chief Curator, Tate Modern, PUSH THE ENVELOPE, 2006
